Dubai on Sunday unveiled plans for the emirate's longest public beach at Jebel Ali, which will become a major eco-tourism attraction.
Dubai's Crown Prince, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, has approved the master plan for the Jebel Ali Beach development, which will stretch 6.6 km and allow visitors to observe turtles in their natural habitat.
The project is part of a wider strategy to redevelop Dubai's public beaches and increase their area by 400% as part of the city's Master Plan 2040.
“Our emphasis is on creating spaces rich in beaches, open spaces and green areas for recreation,” Sheikh Hamdan stated. “The ultimate goal is to improve the well-being of citizens, create a healthy environment for everyone and make Dubai the best place to live in the world.”
Unique project
According to the Dubai Media Office, the beach, which will be built in an existing wildlife sanctuary, will be “a unique recreational area with a high priority for environmental conservation and the protection of local ecosystems and wildlife.” Matar Al Tayar, Dubai Commissioner General for Infrastructure, Urban planning and welfare, noted that the tourist zone will be aimed at supporting nature. “An open beach to the public and a site of global environmental significance, the Jebel Ali Beach development project will be the first of its kind in the UAE,” he said.
Main ecotourism attraction
Jebel Ali Beach will be divided into three zones, including 1.6 km of mangrove beach. The large-scale project will see a 5km sand beach developed by Nakheel and a 1.6km mangrove beach developed by Dubai Municipality. The plan includes a 2km outdoor swimming area, a 2.5km diving area, walking paths with viewing platforms, and recreational and service areas for visitors of all ages, including children's play areas and areas for sports and marine activities. The beach will be connected by a two-lane road in each direction and will include parking for 1,000 cars, 80 bike racks, a bike path and a 5 km jogging track.
Beach spanning three locations
The beach will be divided into three locations. The Pearl, located to the right of the Palm Jebel Ali entrance, will be the center of beach and entertainment activities, including a beach club with a private beach area, children's play areas, and several restaurants, cafes and shops. The center of the development will be a floating restaurant. The second location, called the “Reserve,” will become a refuge for turtles and other natural habitats.
